Is there a benefit or loss of quality by using both, or should I keep the internal TBC off and simply use the AVT-8710?

most of the time you are better with both.
with some tapes you may need to turn off the TBC on the deck.

what is a HR-S988U? i dont think that is an actual model

Use the JVC TBC as much as possible.
Only turn it off when it hurts the image. It happens maybe 1-2% of the time. You'll know when you see it!

The VCR TBC is to clean the image.
The external TBC is to clean the signal (prevent dropped frames), not the image.
