Hi Everyone, first post so go easy on me. I've been lurking on the forum for several months, but recently registered. I have researched
a lot on this site as to what it takes to do a quality transfer for my family's old video tapes.
This is what I want to do: capture analog VHS/video 8 video using a Datavideo TBC-1000 (recommended on this site), using either my JVC HR-S7600U (TBC, recommended on this site) or Sony CCD-TRV87 (stereo, TBC, recommended on this site). I have purchased all of these and have them on hand currently.
Here is what I have for my custom capture PC build so far based on the suggestions on this site:
ASUS P5PE-VM motherboard (Socket 775, Intel 865G Chipset, AGP slot, SATA I, official Core 2 Duo support)
Intel Pentium 4 630 3.0GHz w/ hyper-threading
2GB DDR1 RAM - 2 x 1GB
ATI All In Wonder 9200 AGP with purple breakout box
Seasonic 400+ W power supply
80GB HGST EIDE HDD
2GB Seagate 2TB SATA drive
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz PCI
What I want to do on this machine is to capture about 25-30 lossless compressed analog tapes of old family home videos through
HuffyUV (non-MT) codec using either ATI MMC or
VirtualDub. After that, I have no use for the machine and will sell either the whole box, or I will part it out. I will be using the latest XP Integral Edition as suggested by lordsmurf and others.
My question pertains to the CPU.
These are the choices that would be "faster" than my current CPU that are officially listed in the CPU compatibility list for my board:
- Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66GHz (the fastest regular core 2 duo supported for the board)
- Core 2 Extreme X6800 (2.93GHz,1066FSB,L2:4MB,revB2) - sells for $$$ on eBay
- Dozens of Intel P4 processors that are clocked higher than 3.0GHz, including several P4 extreme editions. Officially compatible P4s go up to 3.7-3.8GHz.
- About a dozen or so Pentium "D" models that are clocked higher than 3.0GHz.
My goal is to capture analog video with little, or ideally zero dropped frames. Given the task, is a P4 3.0GHz enough power for basic
HuffyUV capture, or should I purchase one of the above faster CPUs if I have the ability to drop in another processor? If so, is the Core 2 Duo E6700, with a lower per core clock speed than the single core P4 (2.66GHz vs 3.0GHz) at an advantage/disadvantage to the P4 I have? Does it even matter for lossless capture?
Any other suggestions or input on my workflow would be appreciated.
