Burn with ImgBurn in DVDShrink, modified DVD Shrink 3.2 files [DOWNLOAD]

If you're using DVD Shrink, then you should really modify it to use ImgBurn. Read the preface, then download the files below...

Preface / What This Modification Does

Development on the freeware tool DVD Shrink ended years ago, but it's still a very valuable tool for anybody that wants to quickly re-author a DVD, or even to transcode (aka "shrink") a dual-layer disc to fit a 4.3GB ("4.7GB") single layer DVD-R or DVD+R. Old ≠ useless.

DVD Shrink has three basic functions:

1. Read a disc, which it does terribly and slowly. This method is also somewhat abusive to DVD drives. So use something better, whether it's

DVD Decrypter ($0 freeware), which works probably 90% of the time on retail DVDs, but 100% of the time on homemade DVDs.
DVDFab ($50) or DVDFab HD Decrypter ($0 but limited), for those few times when DVD Decrypter fails, or
Slysoft AnyDVD (~$50). Use DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD running in the background.
While a simple drag-and-drop off a disc may work, actual ripping programs tend to be more reliable. Ripper programs will retry the read to bad sectors, while a simple OS copy will barf and halt, failing to copy the DVD contents to your hard drive.

2. Transcode a DVD-Video. This is what DVD Shrink is known for, and what the generic term "DVD shrink" comes from. This is easily one of the best MPEG-2 transcoders available to consumers (and even some professionals), due to its quality controls -- the Adaptive Error Compensation (AEC) and Deep Analysis settings. For example, with AEC set to 'Smooth' and deep analysis turned on, the transcode/"shrunk" disc can appear indistinguishable from the source, at least very close. (This also assumes the source was not overly compressed quality).

3. Burn a disc. This is a function that DVD Shrink only has by use of APIs to other already-installed programs. The original unmodified version of DVD Shrink would connect to the Nero API, and you could then burn with Nero Burning ROM. Because Nero has known issues properly burned DVD-Video format discs (improper 32k gapping of IFO and BUP files, which can lead to playback errors), it was never suggested.

And that's what this post is for....

Add ImgBurn to DVD Shrink

One of the best DVD burning programs that currently exists is ImgBurn, made by the developer of DVD Decrypter (known online as LightningUK!) after that project ended. Best of all, it's freeware. Yes, a free program is outperforming commercially developed applications that routinely sell for $50-100 or more.

To add ImgBurn burning to DVD Shrink, download the files below, and then follow these three easy steps:

Install ImgBurn from the setup file.
Install DVD Shrink from the setup file.
Go to the DVD Shrink folder where the program was installed, and replace the DVD Shrink 3.2.exe with the one in the attached mod file.
- On Windows XP or 32-bit Windows versions, look in C:\Program Files\DVD Shrink
- On Windows Vista 64 or Windows 7 64-bit, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\DVD Shrink

And then you're done.

Your DVD copying workflow will be modified as such:

Read a disc in another program (i.e. DVD Decrypter)
Open the ISO or files from your hard drive, and transcode and/or re-author in DVD Shrink
Burn using ImgBurn, as instructed from within DVD Shrink

Disclaimer

Transcoding is an optional part of a duplication process, which is not the same as illegal copying of DVDs.

While I realize this information can be used in illicit behavior (i.e, the ability to rent-and-copy, or to copy DVDs you don't own), I specifically do NOT encourage, condone or in any way approve of this action. Those of us in the hobby community understand that damage that is done when, for example, TV boxes sets are copied and not purchased, which leads to future releases being canceled or passed over by studios. Long-term, copying DVDs for personal gain does nobody any favors. If you use this information to "backup" Netflix or the local rental store, understand that you're only hurting yourself.

The proper use of DVD Shrink is to re-author a DVD to suit your own needs. Or as a way to backup your own collection, when the original disc is either rare (hard/impossible to replace) or factory damaged (skips, won't play properly, etc). DVD Shrink allows you to copy a dual-layer DVD to low-cost DVD-R or DVD+R media. And in this context, the "original" source DVD may very well be something homemade, or even something commercial for which you have the right to edit or copy.

Hello all,
was pleased to find mod to get dvdshrink to run imgburn instead of nero . have installed twice - restarted etc etc and dvdshrink still says burn with nero . have followed your instructions ok ( i hope) but no joy so far . i have never actually used dvdshrink to auto burn before and i would like to be able to ... my system is a bog standard xp 32 1gb celeron with mse and mbam pro running . no tweaks or any such like . what am i doing wrong ? thanks for any ideas . cheers madbob

You've simply overlooked it.

DVD Shrink works like this:

Open a disc ISO image, or open files off a hard drive
- Never open a disc directly. It's bad for the drive, and makes DVD Shrink work much slower. Beyond that, discs with copy protection generally cannot be read, so if you're trying to make an emergency copy of a rare disc, you'll have to rip it in something else first (like DVD Decrypter).
Either re-author (keep movie only), or compress the full disc -- this is basically a pick-and-choose type editor.
Under compression settings, deselect unwanted audio/subtitles, or tweak compression settings
Click the big BACKUP button, which has several more tabs of options --
- For example, max smooth settings with deep analysis, which takes longest but looks best. In the era of quad core computers, calling it "longest" is almost a joke now, as it's at least as fast as realtime, if not quite a bit more. When DVD Shrink was still new and actively developed, it would take many hours.
- Disc title
- CPU priority (best to leave alone), and ability to have computer shut itself off when finished
- Remove regions by setting all of them
Selecting the target device to burn the new copy, whether it's burned directly to a disc, or burned to an ISO image file on the hard drive.
- This is where you'll find "Create ISO image file: ISO image file and burn with ImgBurn"

I'm running windows 7 64bit. I've used DVDShrink for years now on my old XP system w/ Nero, but my new system will not accept my version of nero & I found IMGBurn to be more efficient... So, I would love to get this to work, but it's like the MOD file isn't being reconized as a viable replacement for the DVD Shrink 3.2 exe file. What am I doing wrong?

Just to verify, you're replacing the "installed" EXE file with the modified EXE file, correct? (I've seen where people have tried to "install" (run) the modified file, but it's not an installer. It's a replacement file. Delete the old file, replace it with the new modified version.)

After replacement, does DVDShrink run at all?

Also see the image in post #3 above. The ImgBurn setting is hidden in the dropdown box.

Correct. I am deleting the DVD Shrink exe & replacing it with the modified exe & the program will not run.

Alright... two more questions, then:

1. Is it in the C:\Program Files\ folder or the C:\Program Files (x86)\ folder? Remember that this is a 32-bit program and needs to be run from the x86 program files location.

2. Have you tried to run it in XP mode? Not the new VirtualPC intergrated feature, but right clicking on the desktop's shortcut, going into Properties, and choosing XP compatibility mode. I'd opt for SP2, not SP3. That is known to help older software sometimes. Report back if that does or does not work. If it does, I'll add it to the instructions in the first post. If not, we'll keep trying.

For example, I right-clicked on my VLC icon, went to Properties:

Yeah, I've got it in the C:\Program Files (x86)\ folder... after I place the mod file in the C:\Program Files (x86)\DVD Shrink folder & delete the DVD Shrink 3.2 exe file the shortcut no longer works. It says the file name is not valid. Is it possible that I'm removing the wrong file?

Skip the shortcut. Let's work directly from the files in the PF(x86) folder.

The old EXE is a few hundred kilobytes in size. The new EXE is 1.6MB size. Verify the replacement is actually happening.

Also, what are you using to unRAR the file to being with? There's a chance your location archive tool is corrupting the contents of the RAR file. Using WinRAR is suggested -- not something else. You can also try 7zip (freeware), but WinRAR is guaranteed to work. Also consider re-downloading the attached file from the first post, in case your original download was corrupted (unlikely, but possible).

Double-click the EXE to run it. Forget about the shortcut for now. Let's eliminate all possible variables while troubleshooting.

Now see what happens.

Also, did you try the compatibility mode workaround? Be sure to try that, too!

AHA! I did not unRAR the file... I did so with WinRAR & now it works perfectly. Thanks for all of your help & patience!

Ok, I am new to this. Was using nero7 with dvd shrink and all was well. My laptop bit the dust so I installed DVDshrink and Nero 11 trial version but when I go to backup it tells me that I still need to download nero (I already did) I heard of img burn and that it worked better and that it was free. Now I just have to figure out how to get img burn to work with DVdshrink. I do not get the option of ISO Image file and burn with Img burn. I ran the video and when I get ready to back up it just says ISO image file (this is the only option that is available to me)

I also wasn't sure what to do with the dvd shrink 3.2 mod (tried to open but wouldn't and didn't know what I was supposed to do with it after that)

I already have DVD shrink and img burn downloaded and don't know how to make it work from here. Please help.

If you haven't done so yet, you will need to download the mod file in lordsmurfs original post. You will need to use WinRAR to extract the file. Once you extract the file, copy and replace the original file in the DVDShrink program installation directory appropriate for your OS ("C:\Program Files (x86)\DVD Shrink\" on 64-bit Windows, and "C:\Program Files\DVD Shrink\" on 32-bit Windows). Make sure you replace the original when it asks you, or simply delete the old file first before copying over.

As shown in lordsmurfs first post, when you are selecting your "Target" from the drop down menu, simply select "ISO Image File and burn with ImgBurn"

Using DVDShrink will work just like normal, the only difference is instead of using burn with Nero, you will now be using burn with ImgBurn.

Hope this helps clear out any confusion.

Hi, I have done everything you described, replaced the file, but when I go to change the burning in DVD shrink preferences, the only option I still have is burn with NERO. Where am I going wrong?
