Every frame captures a part of a movement. If you ever seen an animation documentary you'd know what I mean. If frames are missing, then the motion of a person or thing is jerky. Check out this page on vcdhelp on how to have losseless captures.

P.S. Loss frames are either due to processor speed or other applications interfering

VirtualDub may also drop or add frames to ensure perfect a/v sync. I usually end up having one dropped frame every 2-3 minutes as my sound card lags behind. Without this the audio would be about a second behind after a one-hour capture.

hard disk problems can result in dropped frames also. There is a benchmark utility to test this included with VDub.

cheers for the advice, I had been using programs whilst capturing so I guess that contributed to it. Just need to figure out how to get small capture files whilst keeps the quality.

MJPEG is a good one if you want to have a good quality with less diskspace. I use the PicVideo MJPEG at setting 19 with luma quality at 2 and chroma at 3. I can't tell the difference between Huffyuv and MJPEG at those settings, yet the diskspace usage is much less. You probably might see some differences if you zoomed heavily, but I don't think that's the idea here
