Hi all,
What matrix are u using when you have room enough on your dvd, lets say an average bitrate of 3500?
I have the impression that under the same conditions (bitrate, quant characteristics etc) the notch matrix is a little bit less crisp and sharp when compared with the standard cce matrix?
Is this true, or are my eys playing tricks on me

The notch matrix is aimed to low bitrate and it's not surprising that you find better ones for upper bitrate. Actually I never thought about doing some test

Which matrix do you use for encodings at upper bitrate?

As I said, I never did any tests. I used to put 2 or 3 movies on a DVD, so using the Notch, and when I started to use DVD-RB with CCE to do a 1-1 backup, I never changed my settings .

Ok, then you're using the standard CCE matrix.
BTW, after some more testing I really can't tell the difference between encodes with the CCE matrix and notch matrix. All tested at higher bitrates. Of course, the notch compresses more than the CCE matrix so a higher quality can be archieved.

No, I use kvcd-Notch - actually I directly patched it into CCE using an hex editor just to be sure no other matrix will be used ).

But are you sure the that rebuilder doesn't override this, as it sets all settings including the selected matrix into the config file as far as I know.

DVD-RB Free didn't last time I used it (I think that is why I patched CCE), but since a year I'm using DVD-RB PRO that allows to select the matrix you want, and of course I select the Knotch.
