On the KDVD sample files, it said it was encoded with "Notch" matrix. Is "Notch" matrix the default matrix from the KDVD template? I made some KDVD video without any filters and the quality is excellent but the edge on fast moving objects had "combing" effect which I did not see on the KDVD sample. Is there any tricks I missed? Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes indeed.
The Notch is the KVCD/KDVD matrix.
As for combing effect it most certainly has something to do with your sources being interlaced.
Are you living in PAL land or NTSC land?
Cheers

I am living in the U.S. Both my kvcd and kdvd had combing effects but the picture qualities are very good. I did not see any combing effect on the sample kdvd files and the objects were moving fast in the sample.
