I have a film about 2 hours long which i want to put on a dvd (nothing else).
I was just wondering if i can still use the gop settings and notch matrix
with no filters for this or should i use the standard 1,4,1,1,15 gop and
a standard matrix.
I'm just wondering if i will make things worse cause i wont be needing
the filters.

Thanks.

You can absolutly use Matix and modified GOP withou any filters. The filters are here to raise up the compressibility. But if you have enought space, no need.

But the matrix and Gop will give you a nicer picture than the standards. So use them.

Yes i know what the filters are for thats why i said i wont be needing them.
I just saw people in this forum saying you should only use the notch matrix and mod. gop with the filters or you will make things worse.
So i wanted to ask some one who knows what they are talking about so i could get a straight answer.

and here we go.

Thanks for the reply Dialhot. Cheers.

Not at all
Even if you make a KDVD without filters, and you use the standard DVD GOP max size of 15 (PAL) or 18 (NTSC), you will see less DCT blocks on dark scenes than with any other existing matrix. That is the advantage of the "Notch" matrix. The second bonus is that you also get more compression, which translates to a higher CQ for encoding. Result is higher quality

The longer GOP simply enables higher compression, because ther are less I frames on each group of pictures. But you can only go so far before the picture quality starts to degrade We've found that 24 is a good value for size/ quality compromise.
