I found this board a month or so ago... there is a forum for each Apex model. I used the info from the AD-1100W forum to select a model (purchased at Wal-Mart) that would support firmware mods that would bypass region encoding checks. If you are lucky enough to find the correct AD-1100W model still sold (a coveted '1 Meg' version) it can also be blasted to disable Macrovision encoding.

There is also firmware available to re-enable VCD playing which has been turned off in recent ships of the AD-1100W.
