By following the DV8000-series or DV9000-series PDF on dismantling a laptop, you can self-repair the infamous nVidia chipset overheating issue. HP did not use a heatsink on the nVidia chips in their laptops, instead using what can only be described as a heat band-aid -- it's pathetic. A custom copper heatsink can be machined with a piece of flat copper, a pair of scissors, and a sanding tool (Dremel, sander and vice, etc).

These images quickly show
  1. the breakdown of an HP laptop (follow the manual for step-by-step instructions),
  2. baking the motherboard in an oven -- with only the nVidia chip exposed; the rest is protected by foil (SHINY OUT!)
  3. the custom heatsink being attached with thermal paste,
  4. and the once-dead laptop rebooting back to life
