How can you tell if you're DVD burner is starting to go bad?? I've been having some readibility problems when verifying with DVD Decryptor. The discs are Yuden 8X +Rs so that can't be the problem.

Is your rom reading dsc okay? Have you burned something else . That dont require Decrypter?

If you can copy. It's okay. If it reads not write. Replace it.

When a liteon r-/R+ burner starts to go. You can only burn R- not R+
Not long after . It will read only.

Try lowering your burning speed to 4 X or 2x see what happens.

It may just be dirty. Consider taking it out, opening it up, and blowing out dust. If that doesn't help, open it up again, get out some isopropyl alcohol (from the drug store, 75 cents a bottle), get a cotton swab (q-tip), and get alcohol on it. Swipe the lens once, then twice, gentle but firm. Then get a dry q-tip and swipe it once to dry.

Absolutely DO NOT use a "cleaning disc" of some kind.

Ooops, I've been using cleaning discs for a long time. This is an external DVD burner (Toshiba) and you really can't open it up. It's been a good DVD burner, I've probably burned 2000+ DVDs with it. Any recommendations on what to buy this time???? I think it is gone.

Pioneer
Maybe an LG, see if Best Buy has any on clearance
But I would still suggest the Pioneer.
I assume you want an external.
I prefer firewire over USB2, given the choice.

For an internal drive, Pioneer and nothing else.

Yeah, I think it is dead. It won't recognize the disc to either read or write.

Well guys, I went to Best Buy and pick up a Pioneer 16X DL External burner for a total of $115.00. It works great, but I don't care for the shell that much. Just out of curiousity I checked E-bay. I bid and got the same thing today $40.00-shipped. Can you believe that price and in a heavy duty shell!

Guess what is going back to Best Buy this week?

Pioneer sucks! This is the third time I've messed with these burners and everytime there is a problem. I'm going back to my Toshiba. Toshiba will read at 12.1X 95% of the time. Pioneer (made in China) are slow, shabbly built and not worth the effort.

By the way my Pioneer external is the same as the internals you guys use.

I buy Liteons. Finally had to break down and get new one 16x is also a lightscribe burner too.

www.directron.com

on sale right now 39.99
I knew I should have waited
Oh well, 42.99 + ground 52.54 still cheaper than in stores

It only takes 5 days to arrive for ground.

http://www.directron.com/shm165h6s.html

Last one lasted 3 yrs . Not one problem.

The downside for me. I can only burn disc. cant lightsribe due to outdated processor . I m waaaaaaaaay under system requirements
Requires 1.3 mine 950

How do I know you ask? I put the burner in my neighbors 1.9 pc . My lightscribe worked fine

If you want a good reader drive, get a BTC.
If you want a good burner drive, get a Pioneer.

Sorry guys, the Toshiba 5372 is one of the best I've used. Funny thing about them, is they are nearly twice the price of the rest. Cheapest one I could find is $75.00.
