VLC is all you'll need. It's what I use on all my systems, both home and work.
It plays video files and DVDs too.

This has all the codecs so you'll be able to play most files on any of your players

Philips "up converter" at Best Buy is around $59.00.
It up converts your DVD's to 1080 and plays XVID or AVI files.
It's also multi region.
