Perhaps you misunderstood what I'm trying to say. :) My point is that while manual instructs you to unhook the spacers from the main board, it makes much more sense to unhook them from the mechanism...

I'm surprised that the noise could be DD related because I didn't think it would be engaged in normal rewind, only reverse search/play....

This HR-S8600EU sometimes (not always!) makes a rather concerning noise when transitioning in/out of (slow) rewind mode.
