JVC VCR bad noise when start/stop rewind?

This HR-S8600EU sometimes (not always!) makes a rather concerning noise when transitioning in/out of (slow) rewind mode.

To clarify, it makes the noise when starting and stopping slow rewind, but also when it switches from slow rewind to fast rewind. Stopping the a fast rewind does not produce the noise.

I don't think it's related to this but I'll mention it anyway: the unit has had DD gears removed, as described in https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vcr...amic-drum.html

it make more noise when DD gears are removed. I did it on a deck aswell so i know.

That's good to know, thank you. Did it sound as bad as mine?

I'm surprised that the noise could be DD related because I didn't think it would be engaged in normal rewind, only reverse search/play.

I'll open the VCR and attempt to pinpoint the source of the noise when I find some time.
