They are quite rare. AFAIK there were both in-house and outsourced LGE media - the outsourced ones were made by some Chinese producer and Prodisc (I am not 100% sure).

They used/uses at least 5 different types of DVDR dye, including their own proprietary dye and Mitsubishi's AZO dyes for OEM media made for MKM (Verbatim) and CMC's 4x and 8x DVDRs.

You are right that data do not simply disappear overnight - the change from perfectly readable to unreadable medium is always gradual. But there's always a point when a dye become so faded/decomposed...

Several manufacturers (FTI, MBIL, CMC Magnetics) offer so called "scratch-proof" DVDRs, those from FTI's UHC (Ultra Hard Coat) products range are probably the best ones....

All MIJ Verbatims are actually made by Taiyo Yuden (DVDRs) or Matsushita Electric (DVD-RAM). Mitsubishi Chemicals (the owner of the "Verbatim" brand) does not make any DVD media in Japan any longer.
