My DV camcorder can record in anamorphic widescreen, so there's no need to chop off the top and the bottom and also no need to re-encode, you just have to tell the container what is the proper aspect...

I found another copy of the tape and it doesn't have the same problem. In fact, the editing is slightly different, so maybe the first tape was part of a bad batch.
