Why are you masking the videos? If you're going to encode them to MP4, crop all bad edges and set pixel aspect ratio when encoding.

I guess there's no categorical answer because no-one has tested every camera. With my DCR-T8000E it's "raw". Also there's no 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 sampling with analog video. Those are digital terms.

That's pretty bad. It's dirty/worn out heads with either at record or at playback stage. Bad quality / badly stored tape with the metal coming off of the surface would also do this on playback. But...
