I have read on here that most TBCs being sold now are essentially broken. Is there a thread on here where people have talked about how to actually repair them? Has anyone on here already reviewed some of the repair videos on YouTube? Most of what I have seen are the DataVideo 1000s and the Black AVT 8710s, although I have seen some green ones.

It's far, far too complicated for any Youtube "repair" video. (Ad most of those things are clumsy, give bad advice.)
You can read threads for myself, going back decades. And then in more recent times, Diopter_Doctor has threads discussing repairs.
These TBCs are quite often, literally, never the same process to repair from TBC to TBC.
It's like saying "How do I fix a 2005 Mazda?" So many fixes to address so many things that can go wrong. It would literally take a small manual, not some 5/10/15/whatever minute Youtube skit.
And realize that I rarely use the word "literally".

I'm a service technician. The most common faults with a TBC are often the most common faults with electronic devices in general. Electrolytic capacitors especially the modern SMD types are the first components a tech would usually inspect visually and test for their ESR. For that test a standard ESR tester is required. Also essential is the ability to reliably and safely desolder and solder these components on the PCB.

For the recommended models, there really isn't too much you can do other than recap them if they aren't working other than checking to make sure that connectors don't have dry joints or broken soldered connections. Recapping usually will fix ones that are fixable 90% of the time. The TBC-1000's you can also bypass the distribution amplifier so there's only one output. If you are going with the recommended models, they have relatively few caps and I generally just replace them all and test what the ESRs are after the fact just for fun.
Suppose it mostly depends if what interests you most is the repair aspect or actually using the TBC. If you just want to use one that works well, probably better to get one that is known to work either on ebay or otherwise. On ebay, they have to cover return shipping and give you a full refund even if the item itself does not allow returns since it'd be considered "not as described" if they say it works and it doesn't.
I like the repair side more myself, so I've refurbished plenty of them, but haven't really pitted the different models against each other just yet to see to what degree they differ from each other on identical starting content.
Other question is how many tapes you actually have to convert. If it's relatively few, it almost certainly would be less hassle and expense just have someone here convert them for you, but that also depends if the actual process of video capture interests you or if your goal is just to get to the end point of having your tapes captured with the best quality possible.

Re: lordsmurf...
Are there any threads that give a good overview on (for lack of a better term), the anatomy of the Datavideo TBC 1000 or the green AVT-8710? Are there not certain problems that are more common than others? Are there not certain mistakes in these YouTube videos that are more common than others? Obviously, not every situation is the same. It never occurred to me that anyone would interpret the opening post as implying that.
