Another option is a so called mechanic’s stethoscope. This one:

is dual function, one adapter for hearing sounds “in the air” via the little bell at the end of an open tube (like the one pictured earlier), the other a solid rod for actually touching (stationary) parts of a mechanism to pick up vibrations, ticks and such that might not be getting transferred into the air enough to be heard via the open tube.

This old ex-car mechanic has one and it’s quite useful!

A question is what it is - SSS, dry tape or something else. If we are talking about audio digitization, only cassette tapes what I was not able to reproduce even on Studer A80QC after rewinding from shells on spool (and teflon on dummy and other heads except reproduce head) was few Ampex cassettes. And they acted about the same as your VHS tape. No shed, no dry lubricant like sometimes in BASF, but something terrible - tape surface is like rubber. They was able to completely stop Studer A80QC! But because it is impossible to spoil a corpse with a bullet, you can try to remove tape from shell, place in food dehydrator (or oven) with the same settings as for audio tapes, and look what happens.

P.S. Or it is well known good cassette played after that particular cassette? If so, try to clean all surfaces (probably except head drum) with acetone.

Correct. That tape is one of my testing tapes. It's fine.

We're way past that. With the exception of grease paths, I could probably eat off parts of the deck. Clean as can be. Cleanliness isn't the issue here.

My first instinct when i see and hear this is >> excess back tension. too tight and much friction toward the entry guide especially, hence the noise toward the drum.It most likely also affect the RPM of the drum. I would lower it a tiny bit and see what happen. Easy to adjust (p14 of the SM for the procedure on my XV3)

Maybe. What if you start to play a cassette without a tape? Simply cut it and stick with scotch or anything to shell at supply side.
