So I'm restoring this deck and I fixed the cracked worm gear and its taking the tape just not dropping and loading. This piece fell out of the unit. I cannot find it in the service manual. anyone have one of these they can see where it connects?

If you don't see it in the service manual that means it's part of an assembly that Sony sells as whole, I would look into the brake assembly, It should have a circle or rectangle with a number pointing to it.

I think it is part of the carriage that holds open the tape. Just not sure how it goes on.

For the sake of helping others who may come across this in a google search in the future, where does the piece goes?

It goes on the right side of the loading carriage. You need to pull one side out of the carriage out of the rails to get it in.
