I bought a DMR-ES10 that I only found too late is a region 2 player. So even when used as a passthrough, my NTSC recordings are black and white with distortion at the bottom.
What are my options to turn it into region 1 besides the IR remotes that could set units to region free that I can't even buy because they don't ship to the US?

I'm not sure that it can be changed. I'm not aware of any remote code, nor custom firmware.
This is a DVD recorder, not DVD player, and is valued for the anti-tearing/TBC(ish) passthrough ability. Not for playing discs. It's actually a quite lousy DVD player -- or recorder, for that matter.
... or are you referring to simple PAL/NTSC swapping, not regions? Regions and signal formatting are no the same.
The PAL DMR-ES10 has a menu item to change PAL to NTSC.

Yes, I only just realized after posting the thread that region codes are not related to the PAL output when using it as a passthrough. Sorry.
Unfortunately, the remote (it's the OEM remote EUR7720KM0) that came with the unit doesn't seem to do anything. Remote is working (IR flashing when viewed with a camera) but the unit can't seem to detect any button presses.

I was able to change the region to NTSC from PAL without using the remote. For those interested, it's holding STOP and EJECT for 5 seconds.
I still would like to be able to get the remote to work because there's a throve of settings to play with. If anyone knows, that would be great.

It is not region. Region is from 0 (multi-region) to 5. Europe is commonly region 2 for example.
Any Panasonic remote with input and menu knobs should work. Are you sure your remote do not work? The first read manual.

Well, it works... in the sense that my phone camera can see the IR flashing. But the ES10 couldn't detect anything. Tried a remote from an ES18 and EZ28, both didn't work as well.
I also went over the manuals (online and the hard copy) and other than some button combinations that supposedly switch between DVD 1, 2, or 3 (none of which worked) - there's not much in there that helped.

Is your ES10 output connected to TV or capture card? You need it because all menu is on screen. Do not look at ES10 display. After set up, switch to correct input with input knob.
What happens when you press input knob? Pass through is not related to DVD drive.

FWIW, some gear limits the number of times one can change the region code. I don't know about the unit in question.

Yes, I have it connected to the capture card that's hooked up to my laptop as a temporary work bench. I'm using the laptop screen to view the display output of the ES10.

With the remote? Nothing. The screen only reacts when you do button presses on the unit itself like ejecting and inserting disc, viewing the disc, switching inputs/channels, etc.

Yeah, sorry, the thread title is misleading. What I was referring to is switching from PAL to NTSC which I was able to do with a button combination directly on the unit. My only problem now is the remote not being detected.

This remote works with ES10 (confirmed) along with original.

I'm 99.999% certain now that it's not a remote control issue because the ES10 remote worked fine when I tested it on the EZ28 and ES18.
I strongly suspect it's a busted IR receiver.
