Which AC adapter for AVT-8710?

I know there was an older thread on this, but I got a warning that it was too old to reply to and I didn't see a definitive answer. I have the older green/black model but no power supply. Is the proper power supply 15V or 12V? I see that it should be negative polarity, at least that was agreed upon in the older thread.

I have the original power adapter with my black/green AVT from 2004.
Input 120v 60Hz 10w
output 12v DC 500ma
outer=positive, inner = negative

I'm using a 15V power supply, and it hasn't blown up. Not that I ever use it.

It's what the Craigslist seller included with the green/black model I bought. I believe he was doing tape transfers for pay before he moved out of the country and decided to firesale his equipment.

No idea whether this is the original power supply:

Google suggests that the manufacturer is AT Corporation. Lordsmurf's quoted wattage is slightly higher, at 14W.

The CUI adapter that I quoted is the original A.C.->D.C. wall wart that came with my black/green AVT-8710 in 2004. I still keep my AVT and power supply together in its original retail plastic tray and cardboard box. I've never used any other power unit with it. I've never had the problems I've seen mentioned in forums, either (knock wood!). OEM's do change such components on a regular basis during manufacture. Meanwhile I found several internet listings for the CUI unit, so they haven't disappeared from the planet.

An interesting question. Many devices include internal voltage regulators to ensure the circuit components receive the intended power supply voltage for proper operation. If the system works well with a 12 volts I would use it. Using a 15 volt supply could increase internal heat generation by 25% if it uses a simple series regulator circuit.

I am trying to get a definitive answer, or at the very least a general consensus, on what is the proper power adapter for the Green/Black AVT-8710. I have no issues with the one I have but I have acquired several units without power supplies and I want to make sure to get the proper power adapters.

I know there are several topics in the forum about this subject but the information is conflicting.

I also realize the manual states 15vDC and 12vDC adapters.

The unit I have has a Jemco DDU150060, Class 2, 15vDC / 600ma adapter, center negative power adapter.

In this post, http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vcr-...apter-avt.html, Sanlyn states the original power adapter that came with his unit is the CUI 41-12-5000, Class 2, 12vDC, 500ma, center negative adapter. Several other units I have seen also use a 12vDC adapter.

Is the 12vDC and 15vDC confusion the same for Green/Black 8710 and the Black 8710?

Which adapters are people using for their AVT-8710, 12vDC or 15vDC?

Are there more problems with 8710 units that are utilizing a 15vDC adapter?

Can you get away with not using a Class 2 adapter?

Any insights useful and appreciated.

Power requirements aren't always as exact as some think. I've learned quite a bit in the past year, having finally become fed up with not knowing enough about AC adapters.

The AVT-8710 is the CTB-100G, and a main difference was that it came 15V 600mA center-negative power adapters. 12V working is mostly an issue of potential underpowering of the unit. The CTB-100 (non-G) was designed for 12V center-negative (and I forget amps).

It's also within the realm of possibility that the green AVT-8710 that sanlyn has is the rebadged CTB-100. Hard to say, without comparing close-up internal photos of the board. Cypress was a bit haphazard with some things (ie, why black AVT-8710 is a paperweight, not a functional TBC).

All of the OEM AVT-8710 supplies I've had were EverGlow branded, model DDU150060, 15V 600mA.
Or the aftermarket no-brand generic replacement model SP41-150600, 15V 600mA.

I'm going to merge this thread with that one.

I bought the green AVT-8710 on eBay. It came without a power adapter. I bought this one a few years ago and it has worked well without issue:

I guess the 3vDC difference between the power adapters does not seem to effect the 8710 units.
