Even if no de-interlacing is involved the fact that taking the Y/C signal (S-Video) and converting it to YPbPr signal (Component not YUV) in the analog domain is already affecting the quality of the chroma.

But "signal" was always more accurate. For example, in 1950, if you said "data" in reference to video, somebody would probably look at you like you walk into the room naked.

So maybe one can compare it with the "data" tapes for the C64 or Spectrum 48 computers, or 56K (baud?) modems used for dial-in internet in the early days...

My guess with DV.. a transferred movie when broadcast will give better sharpness,(when captured from tape) than a sport event "filmed" with a video camera, i noticed also, that broadcasters prefer interlaced video for sport events...

The interlace gives more motion under current broadcast standards (30p/60i, 25p/50i). I'm not aware of any 60p broadcasting. It'd eat up at least another 25% of bandwidth, and signals are already getting crushed by transponders.
