But "signal" was always more accurate. For example, in 1950, if you said "data" in reference to video, somebody would probably look at you like you walk into the room naked.

So maybe one can compare it with the "data" tapes for the C64 or Spectrum 48 computers, or 56K (baud?) modems used for dial-in internet in the early days...
My guess with DV.. a transferred movie when broadcast will give better sharpness,(when captured from tape) than a sport event "filmed" with a video camera, i noticed also, that broadcasters prefer interlaced video for sport events...
