The DVK has a weak frame sync TBC, not made for consumer/videotape (VHS,etc) type sources. It needs pre-processing to calm the signal some. The bare line TBC of a VCR (JVC/Panasonic) can sometimes be adequate here, but the fail rate % is high.
The ES10/15 has a strong+crippled line TBC, with non-TBC frame sync. The ES10/15 fail rate is further reduced, and it becomes a 99% effective combo as TBC(ish). The only flaw here is you get all the downsides of the ES10/15, some DVK downsides -- again, not a TBC. But it can work, for usually lesser cost. It's a budget option, next best thing to an actual TBC.
Of course, actual frame TBCs are always suggested (mostly DataVideo/Cypress), as it removes the mystery and problems of both "no TBC" or the TBC(ish) combo.
