Hi again
I'm still battling to get my basic setup working.
Windows XP Pro SP3 (32 bit)
Pinnacle 510-USB (from LS)
Crossbar thing (from this site) to select SVideo input
VirtualDub 1.9.11 (from this site)
I have attached a short video of what happens.
It starts to display the video signal initially but then typically fails after a short time (minutes)
Here's what I do ...
Ensure video signal is present at desired video port (SVideo for me)
Run "crossbar thing", select the first entry "Pinnacle 510-USB Crossbar" and "Open selected crossbar" and select SVideo and OK
Select second entry "Pinnacle 510-USB" and "Open selected crossbar" and select "Video Decoder"
At this point I always observe "Signal Detected: 1" select Cancel (or OK) and exit "crossbar thing"
Run
VirtualDub and select capture AVI (Video set to Preview & capture not started) i.e. just "preview" the video
After a short period of time (45 seconds to 4 or 5 minutes) the video "tears" and the display freezes.
Then I can Exit capture mode and VirtualDub
I can go back to the crossbar thing and I always see that the "Pinnacle 510 USB" (second entry in the crossbar thing) Video Decoder now shows Signal Detected: 0
... but of course the signal s still present.
...........
Same thing happens with AMCap (preview works for a few minutes then video image appears to tear and stop
For some reason I can not get VirtualVCR to work on my machine - it installs but will not run (I've attached a pic of that failure)
My point is that I don't suspect a VirtualDub issue as multiple capture programs do the same thing.
I have an USB HDMI dongle and it never seems to fail - I can capture or preview for hours (obviously I do not need crossbar thing for this) so I think my PC h/w including USB ports are good.
I have tried windows XP home SP2 (fresh install from Microsoft iso) and same result. I prefer the XP SP3 ISO because it does not time out due to inability to any longer activate XP by Microsoft)
The common denominator seems to be
- Pinnacle 510-USB device itself OR
- Pinnacle driver
Can anyone suggest other things to try to help me to narrow down the possible cause of the issue?
.......
Additional information
Occasionally (without changing anything it will work and I have captured a couple 2 hour tapes without issue - only to come back later and try capturing another tape and have the failure happen a few minutes into the capture).
I can "clear" the problem by "Safely Remove Hardware" for the Pinnacle 510-USB, remove the dongle from the USB port and then plug it in again.
This usually clears the problem and I can do the crossbar thing and run VirtualDub and capture AVI but it will fail again within a few minutes.
Trying different USB ports does not seem to impact the time to failure which is fairly random - but removing the device and plugging it back in appears to be what gets things cleared until I try to preview or capture again. Same for rebooting the PC - everything is cleared but it usually fails again within a few minutes of re-launching a video capture program.
Same failure occurs if I actually "set the capture file" and capture [F6]. (I was simply trying to exclude any possible hard disk write impact).
Thanks
Chuck
