I'm guessing he meant storing these tape types indefinitely in a low humidity environment will protect it from the dangers associated with a high humidity environment, and wont in itself damage the tape. I doubt he was claiming that the tape itself has an indefinite life, or would have if only it was stored in a low humidity environment.
