Working on a project.
I have captured my vhs tape to an .avi file.

I’m having difficulty using .avi and I’d like to put it in an .mkv container.
I have downloaded and installed mkvtoolnix, but I’m lost how to use mkv merge.
I have an older PC. Runnning Windows Vista, 32 bit software.

How can I convert a file in drive f:\temp\stvhs1.avi to an .mkv?
I don’t want to compress or lose any quality just yet.
This was captured using huffyuv codec 4:2:0 color.

I was able to do so in Handbrake, but I feel the file size was too small and I lost some quality.
So, trying for a better conversion. Thanks!
I feel it’s probably simple but has eluded me thus far.
Capture File size is about 25 GB. Too large for some free converters I’ve seen.

Don't use MKVMerge, use "MKVToolNix GUI". Start it up, drag the .avi file into the upper left window ("Source Files"), choose the destination filename at the bottom, then click "Start multiplexing".

Received this error.
Do I have a bad file? Missing something?
I will attempt to relocate and reinstall the gui.
I think my mkvtoolnix is version 24, 32 bit as my system is so old.

It looks like you need Windows 7 or newer for MKVToolNix GUI.

I don't know how to use MKVMerge, but ffmpeg can do it.

Code:
ffmpeg -i video.avi -o video.mkv
