Hello,

I have recently joined the site looking for best practice advice on digitising some old VHS home movies.

Following the forums, I have started collecting some kit consisting of a JVC S-VHS deck, a Panasonic DVD recorder, and a 9600 SE AGP card just arrived off eBay to go into an old PC. Motherboard is an ASUS P4S800MX SE and OS is a new install of XP SP3 on a new Samsung SSD.

PC works fine, and detects the card once inserted but no matter what I do I cannot get windows to install drivers for it.

I have used the Catalyst 010-V010800-100 CD that came with the card, and also tried the slightly later version off the site. Done an install/reinstall, and still have two devices in device manager that wont install.

(I am doing this using the mobo onboard VGA)

Any advice on where I might be going wrong?

Cheers, Richard

Update to this. I found another basic AGP card that worked fine in this system, so assume the ATI was faulty and have returned it. Rather than the hassle of these cards, I have ordered an I-O Data GV-USB2 which I will use on Windows 7 64 bit.

The card may or may not have been bad. Hard to say this early on.

Those cards have hassles as well. There's a reason those cards are not suggested by most folks. If you insist on cheap and new, then that's the best you can get. If you don't insist on cheap/new, there are better options.

Thank you Lordsmurf. There's an 'interesting' review of the GV-USB2 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flc8pOWm6YQ

Nothing at all wrong with the GV-USB2. It works fine.

This might have been the problem.
IIRC, all AIW cards must be the primary (only?) video display card for the capture features to work. It’s probably also required to get the software to install correctly. Therefore, you need to disable the onboard video and start by running off the AIW with the generic VGA drivers before installing all the AIW drivers, etc.

On any decent scale, "median" is used, not "average". For example, when looking at incomes, the person making $1M/year will drag up the average to unreal levels that do not reflect reality.

You're one of the few overly vocal fans of this card, posting your opinion anytime the card is mentioned. Fine. But on a median scale, your opinions and experiences will be ignored. That's just how median goes.

But before you claim I also need to be ignored, realize that I'm not overly vocal about it, chiming in at every possible location where it's mentioned. I simply don't like this card (not impressed whatsoever), I don't suggest this card. I only make such mentions in passing, while discussing the intention of the thread/topic (and this is an ATI AIW topic).

In fact, this "post everywhere" (often aggressively, often dismissively) attitude by you and lollo/lollo2 has actually created a situation where people are now afraid to post about their own bad experiences, sometimes even afraid to post questions about usage problems. And so I get PMs instead, at multiple sites, asking for help with GV-USB2, or seeking GV-USB2 alternatives. That's not good at all, it's the antithesis of what's I've been about for 25+ years now -- helping others with video online, in public forums, so all can benefit from my advice. The difference is that I help, I don't "shove it down your throat". The template response of "use AmaRecTV" does not suffice, as it's not a panacea, and it also has some "under the hood" oddities in how it handles video (since it's really analog video game hobby streaming/"broadcast" software, not capture software).

Most buyers of this card are using it for video game consoles and streaming on Twitch/Youtube/whatever, not analog videotape capture. It was made for that video gamer purpose, and positive reviews almost always reflect this. Sometimes using items "not as intended" works fine (example: DVK as TBC'ish), but sometimes it doesn't.

So "it works fine" for you is great, wonderful, I'm happy for you. But in general, referring specifically to videotapes, that's not the experience of others. It's not the median.

Ah! Correct! I missed that on my quick skim. ATI AIW must be both display and capture, you have no choice in the matter. Either all or none. And that's fine, and understandable. It was never intended to be a secondary card.

Rubbish. I have never spruiked the GV-USB2. If somebody criticises it, I will give my opinion. If somebody asks about it, I will give my opinion. If somebody asks for suggestions, I'll wait and then put in my two-bob's worth.

What a load of nonsense.

You've got to be joking.

Reasonably British could be using an AI voice, but that would have to be by far the best AI voice I've ever heard if it is. AI voices typically have odd pauses, are somewhat monotone, and don't put appropriate infections on individual words which he does. I'd love to know which AI software that created it if it isn't real.

Youtube seems like as good of place to get information/comparisons as any other as long as they show their methods for testing, which I think Reasonably British does exceptionally well at doing, but that's just my $0.02.

Nope. I think you'd be surprised at AI voices now. It really is getting hard to tell the difference now.

Scary.
