Hm, from my understanding that DataVideo should work quite well for preventing dropped frames, audio sync issues and overall keep your capture card from throwing a hissy fit. Depends on the condition itself, I've heard they are breaking down as of late.
Basically it'd work great as a frame TBC, one that corrects the signal so that a capture card can capture the feed smoothly. Those VCR (and Sony camcorder) models have a built in line TBC, that corrects visual noise, cleans up the image and keep the image straight, preventing those wobbly lines.
If you can't get your hands on a model that has a built in line TBC, then a DVD recorder like the Panasonic ES15 or ES10 should work, not as well (it has it's own problems) but certainly better than not using one at all.
