To the wise ones of the Digital FAQ Forum:

I am in the process of converting over a hundred VHS tapes for my family but notice on the first capture a line/image glitch near the bottom of the frame (images and sample video link included). The hardware I am using is:

JVC HRS-3500 for playback
a Panasonic DMR ES-15 as a Line TBC pass-through device to my capture hardware
The capture device hardware is an ATI TV Wonder 600 USB
The computer I am using is an Dell Optiplex i5 2400 3.10 Ghz processor (with a 240 gb SSD and 4GB of Ram) running Windows XP Pro SP3
the software I am using is Virtual Dub 1.9.11 with Huffy YUV codec.

The screenshots are from the raw video capture (AVI) from Virtual Dub and the video in the link provided is an export from Selur Hybrid.

What could possibly be the cause for the glitch? It is not visible on the playback to a television and seems to be a product of this combination of capture hardware and software. Any advice/feedback on what settings I should possibly adjust to avoid this result? I am also waiting for a ATI "Gray Box" TV Wonder USB to arrive to see if I get an improved capture with this hardware. I am primarily concerned with addressing the glitch/defect in the image quality but I also notice in Selur Hybrid the export result seems “jittery” and i’m not referring to my camera work as a 7th grader using my parent’s new camcorder, just the motion cadence/frame interpolation effect that seems a bit off. The Selur Hybrid settings I am using are as follows

exporting to an pro-res mov container (originally an AVI)
NNED13 resizer method
bicupic spline resize method
vaporsynth
auto-deinterlace handling with QTGMC top field first
enabling “bob” for, and slight de-noise and sharpen filters

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Don't think you're talking about the overscan noise on the bottom which is normal, that streak is a problem.. might be a dropout? Since you're using Hybrid, maybe trying running Spotless and see if that fixes it. Can be found on the other tab under the Avisynth tab.

My main concern is the incorrect aspect ratio for the video sample and incorrect size leading to way bigger black bars than normal, why are they 890x575 and not 720x480?

Thank you for you response. I finished work early today and I am in the process of trying to figure out what is causing both that glitch "stripe" possible drop out and the aspect ratio issue. In virtual dub 1.9.11 preview window I do not see this strip when watching the playback in either s-video or composite (i'm using shielded s-video cables all the way but decided to test with composite). Here is a short video or my hardware setup as well as the settings on my ES-15, Virtual Dub and my VCR. I accidentally pressed the remote towards the end when showing my VCR settings. I normally unplug it when i'm not starting a capture project so I have to redo all my settings, i'll normally turn off superimpose, turn on stabilization due to getting better results with it on combined with the line TBC on my ES-15 and turn S-Video mode to on.

virtual dub 1.9.11
under "capture pin" menu settings it confirms 720x480 is the resolution, and under set "custom format" menu settings 720 x 480 with YUY YUV 4:2:2 interpreted is shown as selected

on my panasonic es-15 there are a few settings:
- pressing setup button on the remote
- under tv screen there are options for both 4:3 & 480i and 4:3 & 480 p which is currently selected.
- under video there is black level control for input level and output level for both s-video and composite. s-video input is set to lighter and output is set to darker
- pressing the display button on the remote (not available in previous menu) i can either turn progressive on or off. keeping it on allows 3 "transfer" settings: video, auto1 or auto 2. it is currently set to "on" and and "video"
- line in nr can be on or off. it is currently set to off

Just a note from the 2nd video, 480p got selected on the ES15 4:3 TV menu, then the check while playing shows Progressive: On.

I haven't used an ES15, but why are you setting it to 480p?

Do it once. Do it right.
