I am digitising my VHS-C tapes. I have just received a S-VHS recorder with TBC but the S-video connection is dodgy. It works but the connection is not secure, so the connection has to be wobbled to get a picture.
The next part is where I am unsure. Is using a scart adapter with S-Video as good, or nearly as good as the direct S-Video connection? I have an old scart/S-video converter, but I get a slight fine 'netting' over the picture when useing the adapter. This also happens with my normal VHS recorder. Can I get a better adapter that will not have the 'netting' effect?

- cable may be bad
- cable may be "too fat" (fat headers) -- the "name brands" like Monster and Blue Jeans are crap, for this reason
- internal joint soldering may be damaged, due to abuse/overuse of connection -- often caused by fat/tight cables (see above)
Nope, SCART adapters are a PITA, and do not work probably 99% of the time. Native s-video is what you want/need.
Where did this unit come from? If eBay, return it*. This is why "tested" and "working" claimed are 100% BS from that site. (* The exception is if it comes from a reputable seller, but there's only 2-3 of those in Europe. VCRshop is the best to deal with. Contact them for post-sales support, and they'll make it right.)
That "netting" is probably "Hanover bars" (jargon term), a uniquely PAL issue that can present.

Thank you for your reply.
The VCR is a JVC HR-S7722EK Super VHS ET Video Recorder. Are there better, or would any difference be minimal?
Apart from the S-video connection it looks and seems to be in very good condition, and I got it at a good price.

7722 should be a nice model, but that exact unit is definitely not functioning properly. The 76xx/77xx line is actually my favorite for PAL JVC decks with TBC. So right model, wrong unit.
If you have the ability to analyze and repair the s-video I/O, then I'd pursue that. I've had this happen to decks myself, back in the 00s, which is why I've been so careful since.

I bought another S-video cable from Amazon and it works fine. It was a better fit, and there is no loss of video when you try to wobble it, as the fit is good there is no wobble. Once again thank you for your help.
