Is Philips VR-948 VCR good?

Hi there.

I am looking to capture some home movies. I have not gotten a TBC or capture card yet, but I have gotten my hands on a newly serviced Philips VR-948 S-VHS machine. Will this machine be sufficient as a playback device in a capture workflow?
I wasn't able to find a lot about it, which may indicate that its not a good machine. For example, I was unable to find if it has a line TBC.

Probably does not have a line TBC, I believe the few that do are numbered over 1000, like 1100 comes to mind. Pretty sure it is a JVC OEM machine, though it might perform a little differently. Another user posted recently about the picture modes not quite matching JVC's on a similarly numbered model (theirs was the 960B), but I actually thought the image looked less noisy than a similar JVC they were comparing it to.

NO! Avoid it like the plague!
It's one of the worst PAL S-VHS VCR ever made by Philips. I own one and the image quality is terrible: noisy and grainy beyond the acceptable level for a high-end S-VHS VCR, not suitable for capturing.
I would buy it for just a few (very few) dozen of euros only because it's a TurboDrive deck.
And obviously no TBC & no DNR. For digital processing on Philips VCR you have to go with the 1000 series (JVC clone), like wrote by aramkolt.

Ah, I guess the NTSC 960 I was thinking of is a clone, not really familiar with the PAL models, but odd they really didn't change the naming convention for JVC clone vs not. Good to know.
