I've read about using these two devices as a Line TBC Passthrough but what are the differences between ES10 and ES15?

I think one would compliment my Hi8 capture workflow. From my Sony CCD-TR748E (Camcorder) through said device and into my Pinnacle/ATIW for capture.

I noticed the camcorder above has only been mentioned once before on this forum, it has some kind of TBC option and DNR built into playback settings. S-Video out, Stereo out but can only record Mono.

I believe the consensus is that the ES10 has a slightly stronger Line TBC than the ES15, but it's mostly nitpicky stuff. The ES15 was sold after the ES10, so it might last longer than an ES10. That said, if your Sony Hi8 camcorder has a Line TBC on playback, then I wouldn't add the ES10/15 into the workflow *unless* you observe wiggly stuff. The rule of thumb is only add items to the workflow if needed. Also, some keep the DNR turned on in the Sony Hi8 camcorders and some turn it off. It's probably not a big difference either way. Just throwing it out there to drive you as crazy as everyone else when it comes to these choices.

Haha yes, so many choices, combinations and variables.

Right, so ES10 slightly stronger. ES15 "newer" model. No other stand out features? Curious what others might have to say now regarding the nitpicking.

I did play with the DNR on the Camcorder and it does make a difference. I'm not that against noise, it has a character of its own, but I had to conclude it does looked better On.

As for the built-in TBC, the manual describes it as "Time Base Corrector" and "To correct jitter". I couldn't tell any difference On or Off with the tape I tested it with.

Think for a camcorder the TBC's effects are more noticeable on the edges of the footage, because it should straighten out any wiggling. Granted, I feel like it is harder to see a noticeable different compared to using a TBC inside a VCR.

In the PAL world, you have many more choices than just the ES10 and ES15.
