I have been using the hauppauge usb live 2 with s video output for some months now (from my Panasonic vcr to my JVC dvd recorder, then to my hauppauge), however I recently purchased an ES15 to help with some bad jitter I was experiencing on some old tapes.

I had some great success with the first tape, I've then tried to use it since and I am just getting a blue screen on the hauppauge capture software (first with just svideo, but composite was working, now i can't get video at all). When I open capture I get a quick flicker of some side to side multi coloured lines, then blue screen.

Sound works fine and I can hear it but no video. I have tried a different s video cable, and tried plugging it into my JVC dvd recorder and I can't get video from that either.

I've tried capturing from vlc and other methods and still no video.

I have tried another laptop and that just says it couldn't start the hauppauge device, whereas the first computer did connect and capture but just no video.

Has anyone else experienced this? I thought initially that the svideo port on the ES15 may have failed or shorted out, but now I am wondering if the hauppauge device has failed.

Just trying to pin down what is at fault as both laptops are emitting different behaviour (one says it can't start the device the other does but no video).

I have also fully uninstalled the software and installed the latest software and driver (it's the latest version of the USB Live 2 device too).

Thanks,

Matt

I wish Live2 and GV-USB2 cards were not so "meme'd" online, over-suggested. The cards have issues. So many posts like this these days.

Let's start here.
VLC is a player, not capture software. Yes, I know, it "can" capture, but quite poorly.
Have you tried VirtualDub 1.9.x yet?

Yes, that, and so many more. The Live2 is not worth the hassles. The quality isn't Easycap/Elgato (Easycraps), but cooperative usage is the issue. Quality is fine, when it works, if it works.

Perhaps.

Can you rule out, or rule in, the ES15, by connecting it to a TV with s-video?

Scientific method at work.

Hauppauge software is nasty, likes to octopus itself into Windows. Even the "removal" tool doesn't 100% remove, I've found myself deleting manually from the registry.

Also, every time you change the USB port, the card reinstalls itself (sometimes silently). So your "one card" could have 25 installations, and that makes a huge mess. This is true of any USB capture card, but Hauppauge card installations start to degrade. I've had to reinstall an OS more than once, just because it was easier than manual cleanup.

The Pinnacle cards in the marketplace are really good. I don’t know about the USB live 2 cards or the GV USB cards. I never have tried one of the not really suggested but not bad cards like those.
