Thanks for all the help LS, I can't wait for the post versioning!

Here is my weekly update (maybe monthly after this) I come bearing over 20 new VCR's.

Interesting. I didn't include these because LS wanted to keep the DVS3 off the list, but the DVS1 and DVS2 were also Japanese releases from the Digipure era, just for your edification!

I removed the Victor HR-VX8 but added a few others from the HR-VX series. I also had to remove the HM-DH30000 and HM-DH35000, because while they are rough twins to their counterparts, they did not include a TBC until the later U.S. release! Please, always verify the chart before you buy anything specific. Sometimes this can be tricky, but over time the list will become more and more accurate. If anyone wants to crawl this Japanese VCR wiki for Panasonics (or even Mitsubishis?) I wasn't able to hit every single one.

New Columns on the chart! While I'm pretty positive many of these Victor models have 2MB or 4MB of frame memory, I was not able to verify it anywhere solidly online. So until we can find some solid evidence, I'm leaving those blank on the chart for now and removed a few notes. A small handful of Panasonics and Mitsubishis I was able to verify from some unofficial press releases and the Japanese VCR wiki I referenced.

I'm also dropping the next handful of translated manuals I have on hand.

LordSmurf if you could be so kind as to update the following chart, as well as add the following text update to my initial post, I would be very grateful. Please and thank you.

Update 8/18/2025 This list has come a long way since my initial introduction. The Assistant was actually used very little in the compilation of this list, and sent me on wild goose chases as much as it helped. (I'm still correcting it's mistakes from the first day info. It was great for searching the Japanese internet for references though.)

While I can't guarantee any sort of accuracy, I highly suspect the list is at least 90% accurate at this point. Aside from many of the dates, which are more like vague guidelines (even though I have corrected many.) I may also have misread 3D Y/C separation or 3D wide as 3DNR at times. While I tried my best, take that with a grain of salt as well. Sometimes I just put "3D" when unsure. Also, just because I put that a VCR has 3D wide does not mean it doesn't have 3DNR, it just means I have not verified it.

Now what were my criteria? It was very loose criteria. For the most part it was TBC+3D tech, but I did make exceptions for Panasonic since the ag-1980 is so well regarded, which I believe was released in 1996. So you will see no date earlier than 1995 (Japan usually got the same tech released a year earlier than us here in North America.)

I tried my best to choose VCR's that have the potential to rival the forums suggested VCR's (aside from the VHS-only VCR's on the list, which are just plain interesting.) I tried to put the better brands at the top (Victor, Panasonic, Mitsubishi) and the lesser brands (for our main purpose at least) towards the bottom. I mostly included those for interest sake, just like the VHS-only VCR's. There are so many more I could include but I tried to stick to this rough criteria, if you have any reason to suspect an older VCR (or really any) belongs on this list (like the sweet Victor HR-W5 perhaps?) please post your opinion. Those are direly needed in this thread. Thanks!

Just a fun fact, since I can't find a service manual for any of these machines anywhere online, including Japanese auction sites. The NV-SB800W and the NV-SB900 share the same head, even though they have different mechanisms (K-Mech for the SB800 and Z-Mech for the SB900.) Source.
