I'm using a Blackmagic Intensity USB 3.0 edition to capture videos on my Windows 11 PC (I know this setup isn't recommended around here). I was having trouble with some of my tapes, so I thought I would create a "reference" by trying to capture a DVD (Frasier, season 1) I had lying around. I connected the DVD player to the capture card with composite video.

I was able to capture this using Blackmagic Media Express, but the audio video sync was off.

I tried capturing it with VirtualDub2. I could get audio, but no video (black screen). Why is that? Am I doing something wrong?

There are 2 main reasons that Blackmagic cards are not suggested.

(1) Usage problems/nuisance, often due to proprietary software needs.

(2) Quality issues with SD analog video, especially VHS/Hi8, which causes dropped/black frames. Blackmagic makes HD cards that "also does" SD (and quite poorly).

Having a DVD player as source doesn't really change either fact.

- For sale in the marketplace: TBCs, workflows, capture cards, VCRs

Whether they are good or not, I should still get a video feed right? Even if it has dropped frames, etc? I'm using a DVD player to eliminate issues of poor timing / TBC problems.

BMD's Media Express software can get the video. VirtualDub2 must be communicating with the card as well - after all, there is audio

It's either Macrovision blocking it (Yes DVD has MV on analog outputs), Wrong input (Composite, S-Video, Component) or wrong color format, The device can be configured in the "BM Desktop Video Setup" application not from the MediaExpress app itself. Though, MediaExpress should detect the color format automatically.

You get audio out of sync in Media Express because video compression is too high and video frames get dropped.
USB connection is very sensitive to CPU load. You can get dropped frames even on 10% CPU load.
Another reason could be is that you use spinning hard drive. So, the buffer gets full and software start skipping frames.

As for VirtualDub2, most likely the input format of the video from DVD doesn't match the format you specify for your card.
For example, your DVD might spit out progressive video, while you anticipated interlaced.
Please double check all your settings.

It can't be Macrovision, because it works using MediaExpress.

I stopped using Intensity Shuttle long time ago for analog (and for digital switched to Intensity Pro) signals because of audio and video was out of sync, at least under Windows 10. Not because of dropped frames but constant audio delay within all record.
