Hi all, I have a Sony GV-D300 recording deck and am wondering if it’s possible to capture MiniDV tapes to my Mac Studio. I can capture via S-Video, but am aware that FireWire is superior.

If I’m not mistaken, I would need a FireWire to Thunderbolt converter to go straight into my Studio? Does the GV-D300 have the capability of doing that?

I also have a Panasonic DMR-ES15 with a FireWire port, but that would still output S-Video and defeat the purpose.

Any suggestions are greatly welcomed!

As long as you have a Mac that does not use the M5 chip architecture and is running macOS Sequoia or older, you can use DVRescue. It’s incredibly detailed and allows for detailed video and audio capture details, .dv merging, and accurate automatic dropout detection.
Yes, you need a IEEE 1394 (400 4-pin, 400 6-pin, 800) to Thunderbolt 2, and then plug that into a Thunderbolt 3 to USB-C going into your Mac Studio.

Macs are fairly DV capture friendly as long as you have a machine with either firewire or you have a firewire to Thunderbolt2 and then thunderbolt2 to thunderbolt3/USBC adapters. DV. You can do it for free with iMovie and the files are saved within the iMovie project "package contents" as native DV files.

QuickTime 7 Pro also lets you capture DV in its device native format. (But not QuickTime 10.)
