That's how I feel about most things these days.
Rest assured, once you actually get the proper frame TBC, it's extremely easy.
Many don't even have settings, and are simply wired to s-video/composite and power. These are the best ones for new users, essentially "magic boxes", and no input from you is required. These simply do the task of preventing dropped frames, and preventing audio sync issues.
I actually have a unit that I recently refurbished, PM me about it. Due to gear aging, I don't often get quality proper-functioning TBCs anymore.
