Thanked 1 Time in 1 Post
So I've had my gear for a while since I was accumulating it over the past year or so, but didn't have any tapes to convert this entire time lol. My family finally did a road trip to visit me so they finally managed to get me the tote box full of old family films, so I tested out my first capture last night and got 0 dropped frames in a 2 hour capture, but 480 inserted frames. This was with the recommended settings from this post:
https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vid...-settings.html

However, I noticed that I had to change my capture settings to be the opposite of what that post says in regards to what settings to set when using a USB capture device like the ATI 600 USB2.0, mainly this part:

With those settings, I got the 480 inserted frames and the audio was actually out of sync.

HOWEVER, when I messed with the settings, I found that I would get 0 frame drops AND 0 inserts with these settings. The audio was also perfectly synced all the way to the end and the video itself looked good from what I could tell.

The biggest culprit was the Automatically disable resync when integrated audio/video capture is detected. When turned on, would cause all the inserted frames and audio to get out of sync.

So I'm wondering since everything looks and sounds good with these "Incorrect" settings, if I'm doing something wrong and it's actually just hiding drops/inserts or something? Or should I just keep using these if it's working well, despite them not being what is recommended for USB capture devices as mentioned in that post?

Gear:
- Dell Latitude 6430 laptop (Windows 7)
- i5-3320M 2.60GHz 8GB RAM
- Upgraded to have 2 internal SSD's (via the optical drive), one for OS and one for storing the captures
- JVC SR-V101US VCR (Has Line TBC)
- JVC LP20303-018 Remote
- ATI All-In-Wonder 600 USB 2.0 (Brand new with all accessories)
- No Frame TBC

Using VirtualDub 1.9.11, adjusted settings based on what I've read here on the forum/elsewhere:
VIDEO:
- Overlay
- Video Source: S-Video
- Capture Filter:
- Video Standard: NTSC_M
- VCR Input: Checked
- Compression: Huffyuv v2.1.1 - CCESP Patch v0.2.2
- Set Custom Format: 720x480 YUY2 4:2:2 interleaved

AUDIO:
- Enable Audio Capture: Enabled
- Enable Audio Playback: Disabled (This was causing a lot of dropped frames and choppiness when on)
- Raw capture format: PCM: 48000Hz, stereo, 16-bit
- Compression: <No compression (PCM)>
- Device: 0 Capture device

CAPTURE:
- Settings: 29.9700 Frame rate
- Timing:
- Drop Frames...: Checked
- Insert Null Frames...: Checked
- Resync Mode: Sync audio to video by resampling...
- Correct video timing for fewer frame drops/inserts: Checked
- Automatically disable resync when...: Unchecked
- Audio latency determination: Automatic - 30 audio blocks at start
- DirectShow options: None checked.
- Disk I/O: (Read a youtube comment somewhere saying setting it to 16MB results in better captures, less dropped frames, but left it as default for now since I have 0 dropped)
- Chunk Size: 512K
- Chunks in buffer: 2
- Disable windows write buffering: Checked
- Only showing the Information Panel and Status bar, nothing else
