Hmm. I wasn't aware that firmware could actually fix the input clipping issue with software - you mean where if the signal is say above 110IRE, it clips it there (flat luma peaks) instead of being able to lower it within the proc-amp, right?
Nearly all of the inputs have potentiometers on them on the inside, my fix would probably be turning down the input gain at the physical input over trying to do it in software, it should then clip at a much higher level and then use the proc amp to boost back up "normal" level signals as appropriate. Never messed with mine to actually do that, you can also just put a hardware proc amp before the unit and accomplish the same thing.
As far as frame drops, can't say I've observed that in my limited testing, but it'd be much more likely to drop if your VCR doesn't have a line TBC running - that reduces overall jitter (including some of the jitter between frames) quite a bit by itself. How do I know this? Silly little decision to get a Tektronix VM700T which will measure jitter between lines and frames. My theory is that all devices have a certain threshold where they will start dropping frames if the jitter gets bad enough, was always a sort of dream of mine to come up with that number for each device, but finding a way to "create" controlled jitter is not my strong suit. The devices we think about as "doesn't drop frames" probably still will at a certain point, or it'll just internally duplicate frames until it gets the next good one.
