Was it one of these suggested JVC models? If not, I can see it happening.
There's a reason we only suggest the higher-quality JVC models, which originally came with pricey S-VHS-C camcorders.

i take the VHS-C tapes apart and transfer the tape inside into a full size VHS tape. it is quite easy and i have plenty of old VHS tapes to use for parts

This is a good solution, too. It's time consuming, however. And you need to be very careful with alignment of the tape in relation to the reel. Alignment errors are why the adapters are horrible (as are cheap VHS tapes, with their cheap cassettes). You don't want to create the same problem from a sloppy shell transfer.
Just be mindful of these things, and you'll be fine.
