On S-VHS/VHS linear audio is the audio recorded along the edge of the tape (also we are talking about an analog video format here not a digital one). It is the same track that VCR's use for mono recordings, or linear stereo (where it splits the track in 2). This is not Hi-Fi stereo, so the audio quality will not be as good as a Hi-Fi recording. I don't use the ATI 800 since I find it doesn't give the best quality, but you'll be able to get linear audio over the regular audio out (I think the AG-1980 uses the regular red/white RCA connectors).

2. If I capture in Svideo how do i capture the audio at the same time as svideo only carries video not audio? I can only select either or on the vcr and virtualdub.

When you hook up your S-Video and the RCA red/white cables your capture card will capture both at the same time. It would just be as if you were using the yellow RCA with the red/white cables.
