I have a SoundBlaster audio card. I would like to stay away from using the purple cable box supplied by ATI.
My ATI 9600 has a S-video input, but my sound card has the mini jacks for audio input.
My question is: How would you input sound from the vcr directly into the sound card, or should I bypass all this and use the purple cable box?

Just use the purple box. The input on the ATI card is not s-video, it's a bundle input for the purple breakout box.
