Hello,

I want to capture some of my old vhs I captured some good lossless avis back in the past if I rememver correct just need some feedback on what to choose.

This is my current setup :
Blaupunkt Rtv 966 > svhs cable > Panasonic DMR-Eh757 > svhs Cable > Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle > Windows 11 Machine using Virtual dub 1.9.11

First Question :
I want to capture standard pal vhs tapes which video output would be the best to select in my Blackmagic intensity software?

Second question :
I can't install huffyuv for the life of me tried everything with no luck so far.
I read that either lagarith or utvideo would be equal if not supperior to huffyuv using modern machines.
Which codec would you suggest to use for my project?
If utvideo which one?

Third question :
If I remember correct I had some filter packages for vdub installed to improve the picture and audio quality.
Is this a good idea if yes what kind of filters would you suggest?

Did you try the modern way of installing HuffyUV?

And you ideally capture the video interlaced, not automatically deinterlaced progressive

Yes I tried that and various other install guides without much success sadly.

What does interlacing mean in this context?

ProRes422HQ should be visually lossless and most blackmagic capture cards support that if you want to use blackmagic's capture software instead. Most people I talk to say that ProRes422 is probably plenty of bitrate in most scenarios with sonsiderably smaller filesize (20GB/hr or so) for SD sources like VHS. You should know pretty quickly if the blackmagic device is dropping frames as it'll just lock up or appear otherwise unstable when you try to play things back, that and any audio sync issues on longer captures is a pretty good indicator.

I don't actually hear much about people using virtualdub when capturing from a blackmagic device, they usuually would just use the free blackmagic media express app. Depending on the device, there might be an uncompressed option, but filesizes will get quite large which may or may not matter to you.

I got everything working fine now in virtualdub with huffyuff working as intended finally.

My final question is should I use filters for capturing (ccd or colour adjustments) in vdub or do everything in avisynth after capturing?
Kind of finfing very mixed opinions on this.

Since your username suggests you speak German, have you read the posts in the German video forum?

I also described the installation of the HuffYuv codec there.

Hofmand’s MSI installer is a good way to get Huffy. You get the right version of Huffy that way https://github.com/hofmand/video-codec-installers.

Do everything in Avisynth or Selur’s Hybrid afterwards.

The Intensity Shuttle can be a troublesome card. It’s known to be bad about dropping frames.

Filters only properly function post-capture, not during. Never use filters during capture.
