I changed the timing settings and tried every Preview acceleration mode. Still getting the same error.

Disable the DirectX under main VirtualDub settings.
Move this external to any C:\Program Files structure.
Use C:\ VirtualDub

Sorry, not sure what this means. Move what exactly? The folder with all the VirtualDub contents? The destination output file? Other?
I did just disable DirectX.
Appreciate the help...

Where is VirtualDub "installed" (unzipped, located)?
Windows has a structure. C:\Program Files can be protected. Software must sometimes be moved external to function without Windows "protecting" you.

Goofy, what LS means is to move the Virtual Dub folder to the root of the C drive (or any other place for that matter; I have all my (3) VDubs on my D data drive). In other words, just don't have it in the "Program Files" folder/directory.
VDub doesn't install; it is self-running in it's folder. It doesn't care where it is, but by the sound of it, Windows might interfere with it if it is in the Program Files folder.

Ok, I understand now. I have had the VirtualDub folder saved to the desktop.
C:\Documents and Settings\Toshiba User\Desktop\ VirtualDub 1.9
So as of now, I'm still stuck. I got my hands on another old PC running Windows Vista that I could try, but it seems the 32-bit XP machine I've been using should be ideal given what I've read on this forum.

I doubt that old Toshiba laptop has the chops to do the job. The CPU is a single core Pentium M variant so probably borderline at best. In addition, I'm guessing that you are trying to capture to the same (only) HD in the machine which is another problem. This is an issue with most laptops vs. desktops since it's not normal for them to have more than one physical hard drive. The Windows Vista machine might be better, but not necessarily since I'm betting it's from about the same period and it will also likely have only one HD. Desktops give you much more flexibility.
Any input from those in the peanut gallery who capture to laptops successfully? Recommended models, recommended minimum specs. OS's, etc.

Just installed Windows 11, check out this ripper histogram (VDub 2)! First time ever I've seen solid red areas. Previously it was a small red tick only.
