My setup is S-VHS VCR HR-S3500U, Panasonic DMR-ES15, Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0, VirtualDub 1.10.14. All using S-Video and I am using a Windows 10 Dell PC.

My goal is to capture lossless video using HuffyUV. The tapes are all analog.

There are a few issues that I am experiencing that is preventing me from properly digitizing. I'll list them in order:

1. I am using the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle, which on VirtualDub does show up and I can click and use it. But it is very finicky, sometimes I can click a random setting and I get the error message "VirtualDub cannot connect to the desired capture driver." When I close out of VirtualDub and then reopen it again, I can use the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle again but it becomes finicky again. Is there any way to fix this? Or is there a better, easier to use capture card that exists?

2. For some reason, YUY2 does not show up in Color Space / Compression: when I go onto Video, Capture pin. The only option is UYVY. Do I have to download it from somewhere?

3. I wanted to do a test without having a proper settings on at least getting some type of video being digitized. I bought an 1Tb external drive so that the transferring video has a place to go to. When I click capture video, I get an error message I am not able to digitize any video.

I am a complete newbie when it comes to digitizing video tapes. I have been slowly learning how to use VirtualDub but I have not been able to figure out these problems.

These were the two YouTube videos that I followed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdGD...IWyH8cK1Q3LwFx and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRwW8F7jBZM&t=13s

Welcome.

Standard issues:

(1) Blackmagic card are infamous for NOT working with SD analog videotapes (like VHS, Hi8) -- nor VirtualDub. BM cards are great HD cards that "also do" SD quite poorly. So HD card, not SD card.

(2) VirtualDub 1.10.x introduced capture flaws not present in 1.9.x (which is downloadable on this forum)

So:
- new/better card
- different/correct VirtualDub version

Are you using actual Huffyuv, of the FFMPEG/bad version?

Do you have any recommendations for lossless capture cards? I've feared that the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle wasn't any good.

Just so I am understanding correctly, downloading VirtualDub 1.9.x would fix YUY2 not showing up?

I had my cousin help me download HuffyUV as I don't use Windows frequently so I don't really know. But it shows up as "Huffyuv v2.1.1" in VirtualDub.

That Blackmagic card does suck. I’ve had one before and sold it based on forum advice. I use a Pinnacle card from the marketplace on this forum now. It’s a nice card and it’s a lot better experience than messing around with a shuttle. The only thing with the Pinnacles is they have production changes because it is a long lived model.

That’s the way a lot of gear for this task is. That’s part of why buying is such a crazy thing. I have a Panasonic 1980ag VCR which had production changes throughout the years because it was a long lived model. My TBC 3000 had at least 5 generations and also some of them were tweaked for PAL even though the sticker said NTSC and vica versa. Then the Pinnacle cards are the same way.
