i was capturing a tape today and all of a sudden the picture tuned black&white
the switch was on color - i flipped it to B&W and back to color and the picture returned to color
this happen 3 more times - i had to abandon the capture

I've seen this. Eventually the VCR would only play tapes as B&W. Something may be going out on it.

Yep you have bad caps in this unit they need to be replaced. The machine may work fine, or you think it is working fine, however your color channels are going to be a mess, and everytime you press stop on a tape and re-start, you are going to have different shades of colors or color shifting...

Good luck...

Don't try getting around this, you CAN'T...

Next you take the VCR to your local shop, they replace 5 caps and charge you $75 or whatever. You get the machine back and you still have the same problems. That is the problem, nobody knows how to repair these things. I pulled my hair out doing this, but I figured it out. At the same time, it costs too much for you to ship me the unit and to ship it back, than to do the repairs...Just buy another unit....You can't cause you are going to have the same problems.....These units are 15 or whatever years old, lots of use, they go bad...
