Well that'd be stupid and would make the comparison worthless.

Interestingly, this YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxVomjsmuZE) demonstrates that XR somehow has much worse colors.

To be more specific, does playing (non-XR) recordings on XR camcorders give a better signal than playing them on non-XR camcorders? Or is XR only relevant when actually recording?

Is XR an essential feature of Sony camcorders?

Sony camcorders got XR (extended resolution) from 1998 onwards. According to Wikipedia, "Video8-XR and Hi8-XR offers a modest 10% improvement in luminance detail." Should I look exclusively for...

Severe noise reduction how-to

I have a tape of which the first 30 minutes are cursed by severe audio noise. In some scenes the noise is pretty bad (14249), in others there is a milder version of the same noise. The rest of the...

Encoding animation VHS captures with Hybrid

I have a bunch of VHS cassettes of animation movies (most are rare Disney movies of which only the VHS version contains a Dutch dub). I captured them to interlaced, 25 fps Huffyuv AVIs, and now I...

I have the exact same problem as OP, but my AI slider is already off. I tried with TBC on and off, and with a Panasonic DMR-ES15 in between as well. Can there be other causes for its ineffect?

Do you perhaps have general purpose scripts and FFmpeg commands (suitable for PAL Hi8) that you don't mind sharing? :)

Why not capture PAL at 768x576?

The general consensus seems to be that PAL 8mm needs to be captured at 720x576, but this involves resizing to 4:3 (or setting the PAR to 12/11, in which case the player will resize). My settings for...

That's good to know!

I honestly don't have much experience with many players, but my impression was based on keaton's post that I linked.

But you got me convinced to just use a 12/11 PAR! :)

Lordsmurf advices against upsizing (http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-web/11380-avisynth-mp4-easy.html#post74304), because upsize artifacts are worse than downsize artifacts.

I think I prefer to store my end files with 1:1 square pixels. That way I'm certain that every player will always play in the correct 4:3 DAR (because I read that there may be players that ignore PAR...

Cropping or downsizing from 720x576 to 720x540?

I want to go from 720x576 to 720x540. Because the horizontal resolution is already there, I won't touch that (apart from masking and recentering, but no resizing). However, because there are 554...

I'm just gonna keep using the ES15 and AVT-8710, because then the image doesn't shift, the colors aren't oversaturated, and I do not notice and quality degradation due to all the conversions.
