i have a home video vhs that i try to capture. there is a certain part (for 5min) of the tape where the sound is getting weird and high pitched and and there is some continues interference on the video. the video before and after this part is fine. also when this part starts playing the vcr is also making some continues clicking noises only when the tape is touching the audio receiver thing. what is happening and is it possible to capture it lossless like this and restore it afterwards?

Sounds it's an SP/LP/EP conflict?

How does the time display on the front of the machine react when you play this portion?

It certainly is a mechanical problem, The capstan motor or the pinch roller, Depends on your repair skills both need to be removed, inspected and cleaned. Also the take up spindle needs to be checked especially if belt driven by the capstan motor.

If it's just on this tape/recording and not happening on others it could be playing at the wrong speed due to damage to the control track or something else on the tape.

Do you have access to test it in any other vcr?

Almost impossible. Some fix for small portion of the damaged frame, and for defects not staying identical across a high number of frames here: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/...n)#post2635329

As someone else suggested, It does look a lot like a long play recording being played at SP speed. I don't think those rent-out moviebox thingies supported LP playback so if you play a LP recording in those it will look distorted, but the JVC you mentioned in your other post should play LP mode recordings fine unless there is some damage to the tape or recording. (Unless it's a PAL EP/SLP recording but that was a very rare feature and the only decks that did support it are from the early 2000s, while this recording looks much older so highly doubt that's the case here.)

Yes, first cature was on a jvc hr-s9850 and i have opened and cleaned it and it works fine on all vhs tapes i've played so far until this 5 minutes segment on certain vhs that wont play properly. The video vas captured on a jvc-s100e in the late 80s. Is there a way to force the vcr to play in a certain playback speed?

The question is, does this tape behaves the same way on more than one VCR or just this VCR? and for the same VCR does it do it with all tapes or just this particular tape? I wasn't clear to what the behavior is exactly is.

Yes it is behaving like this on both vcr i have and it only behaves like this on this specific vhs other vhs tapes works perfectly fine. Is it possible that it was maybe recorded like this. It is not getting like this while playing a clip. It is like this for the whole continues clip. The clip before and after this is playing fine.

In that case it's a bad recording, Either a faulty recording VCR or your actual VCR's don't have low speed capability.
