Hi, I am trying to digitize some VHS tapes. I am very new to this process.

I am going from a JVC HR-S9600U to a Hauppauge 610 USB-Live 2, plugged into my Windows 11 PC.

I am using VirtualDub2 to capture the tapes. I have tried to follow some of the guides suggested on this forum, but even after attempting to install some new codecs, I don't see any of the recommended codecs in my list when selecting my compression.

Here is a list of what I have available to me:

I have made some very nice looking transfers using the "(Uncompressed RGB/YCbCr)" and the "FFMPEG Huffyv lossless codec", but I want to then take my .avi file and compress and deinterlace it for a YouTube upload.

I have tried several codecs, but every time I go to save a new version of my video, the process fails after a few seconds.

I'm assuming this has something to do with the codecs I'm using on my initial captures, but I have no idea what codec is best for my setup.

Can anyone here tell me what I can do to correct this situation?

Attached is the most recent crashinfo file:

I wound up solving my own problem... I was following a guide from this forum that was very outdated, so my installation of the recommended codecs wasn't working. I can't figure out how to delete my thread, but the mods should take it down when they can.

The guide isn't outdated, and is made for VirtualDub 1.9.x

Newer versions of VirtualDub added errors, so those are not suggested for capture. Do not use VirtualDub2 for capture, it induces dropped frames especially (thus also audio desync). Few exceptions for specific cards.

VirtualDub2 is not stable. There is a reason we use VirtualDub 1.9.x

VirtualDub 1.10.x -- final official version -- added errors
VirtualDub FilterMod (FM) -- a fork -- was based on 1.10
VirtualDub2 is a renamed FM -- and this is defunct as well, the dev has been MIA for years.

FM/2 was made for processing other codecs/wrappers (MP4, etc), not capture. The capture is often fubar.

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. Your posts have guided me for a long time!
I was using this tutorial:

It seemed to work out really well, especially after I figured out how to properly install the codecs.
I can't really visually identify any issues with my VirtualDub2 transfers, can you tell me what I should look out for?

Honestly, I'm so in over my head, it's hard to understand personal preferences vs objective best practices.

I am attempting to revert back to 1.9.11, but for some reason, the codecs I have installed don't appear.
Here is what I'm seeing:

Do you have any advice?

Hey, I wanted to follow up here.
I am using your recommended version of VirtualDub for capture; however, I would like to be able to use the "x264 8 bit - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec" in preparing my raw capture files for a YouTube upload. That codec only appears in VirtualDub2 for me, and whenever I convert the files, I get the crash that I initially reported.

I'm only trying to use that codec because a video told me to. I'm not at all attached to using VirtualDub2, I'm just trying to get my raw captures to look decent for streaming.

I am trying to search the forums for some guidance, but I'm having a hard time with that. I found a post here that mentions a workflow using Hybrid and Avisynth:
https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-web/14063-workflow-critique-youtube.html

Is there a workflow guide here that explains those programs? I should probably mention, I'm on a Windows 11 computer.
